BLUE MOUNTAINS GAZETTE - REWIND Video Club presents Stand By Me at Blue Mountains Theatre
REWIND Video Club presents Stand By Me at Blue Mountains Theatre
REWIND Video Club, the Blue Mountains Theatre’s monthly retro movie night, returns with 1980s gem Stand By Me on Friday, August 18 at 8pm.
Stand By Me features a who's who of precocious talent (River Phoenix, Keifer Sutherland, Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, John Cusack) and a storyline that is funny, suspenseful and moving.
Set in small town America in the fifties and based on the novella The Body by Stephen King, Stand By Me tells the story of a group of four friends who venture out in search of the body of a missing teenager. En route they sneak smokes, tell tall tales, cuss ’cause it’s cool and band together when the going gets tough. When they encounter the town’s knife-wielding hoods who are also after the body, the boys discover a strength they never knew they had.
Frequently listed as one of cinema’s greatest coming-of-age tales, Stand By Me is so much more than that. Stand By Me masterfully captures the end of childhood, a moment we can only recognise with the benefit of hindsight. Far from being a goofy and nostalgic take on childhood, it deals with both the trivial and the darker issues many people struggle with in their early lives including loss, neglect and abuse. Yet there is enough humour to ensure the movie remains warm and heartfelt, but never saccharine. Stand By Me is a rare film that showcases a group of boys openly displaying their emotions, and their tears are met with sensitivity and kindness.
Stand By Me is a special film about friendship and the indelible experiences of growing up. This movie is deservedly a classic.
Doors and bar open 7pm, movie starts at 8pm. Tickets just $12 and can be purchased at the box office, on 4723 5050 or online at www.bluemountainstheatre.com.
