A jockey autograph party is set for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17, at K-Bob’s Restaurant on U.S. 70. Racing fans are encouraged to come and meet their favorite riders. The event will benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, which raises funds nationwide for Injured jockeys.
The oil rub-out artwork of Tiffanie Owen is on display at the Capitan Public Library through August. Library hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday, closed on Monday and Sunday. The library is at 101 E. 2nd Street, Capitan. Lincoln County Community Theatre will hold open auditions today, Aug. 16, and Aug. 19, to cast five one-act plays for The Playwrights Series. The auditions will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, and from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug 19, at the Old Mill on Sudderth Drive in Ruidoso Scheduled throughout the month of October, The Playwrights Series will present original works by local authors with a new play staged every week. Auditions are for all ages and ethnicities. Monologues and songs are appreciated, but not required. Anyone interested in performing and production work is urged to attend. A free community movie, “The Princess Bride,” is set for 8 pm. to 10 p.m., Aug. 18, at First Christian Church, 1211 Hull Road, Ruidoso. Popcorn and water or lemonade will be provided. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the show.
Jamie Estes & the Brunch Bunch, Dave Millsap, Bud Hewett, Pete Davis and Sam Shackelford, will perform from noon to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 20, at Sacred Grounds Coffee and Tea House. It will be a fun filled hand clappin’, toe tappin’, fan wavin’ good time with old spirituals and new gospel music, plus some fantastic food. Sacred Grounds will be offering free valet parking, so you can pull up to the door and let someone else park , and there will be no cover charge. For those who couldn’t join us last month, it was wall-to-wall people and floor to ceiling fun. We will have the regular menu along with Chef Zach’s specials prepared especially for the brunch. Sacred Grounds is at 2704 Sudderth Drive in Ruidoso.
Carrizozo Music, Inc. conducts its second annual fundraiser on Sunday, Aug. 20 to include a dinner and silent auction, and a Portico Concert featuring the Chicano String Band music of Lone Pinon. The concert is free, but supporters or the music program are urged to purchase a roast pork dinner with all the fixings, available from 4 p.m., and as take-out, while browsing the our silent auction and enjoying an evening of lively music and dancing on the lawn of the Carrizozo Woman’s Club. The White Mountain Search and Rescue team will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 21, upstairs at the First Christian Church, 1211 Hull Road, Ruidoso. The board meeting will be at 5:45 p.m. and is open. All interested people are welcome to attend the team meetings. Topics will include recent missions, field certification and callout procedures. Beginning Aug. 28, the public is invited to “Come Sing With Us,’ when members of the community choir at First Christian Church blend their voices from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Monday at the church at 1211 Hull Road in Ruidoso. For more information or to register, call 257-2120.
A new art show opens featuring the photography of Sherry Haynes will open Aug. 31, at Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso. Entitled “Real/Unreal,’ the show will run through Nov. 1. An artist’s reception is planned for 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 5.
Lincoln County Community Theatre presents "Improv Workshop” beginning at 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the Old Dowlin Mill, 641 Sudderth Drive, in Ruidoso. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and improve improvisation skills in a friendly setting. Get ready to have your funny-bones tickled.
